University girlfriend
Nineteen-year-old Anoushka Dougherty finished school earlier this year and spent the summer months thinking about her next big step - leaving home in Kent and heading to university in Manchester. One of the major questions her friends were grappling with, she noticed, was what to do about their existing boyfriends and girlfriends. To dump, or not to dump? It's the summer before the start of university, results are around the corner and the time of home-cooked meals and laundry that appears to do itself is finally ending. But despite the fact that we should be fussing over budgeting and acquiring culinary skills beyond the realms of pasta and Pot Noodle, one of the most stressful decisions surrounding uni for a lot of people is whether or not to remain in their secondary-school relationships. Speaking to my friends, I've found that some are opting to keep relationships going despite the pressures of distance while others are finishing things before the start of term.

How to Get a Girlfriend in University

Don’t even think about starting university in a relationship | Freshers | The Guardian
This September, hordes of hopelessly devoted students will head off to university in a new city and misspend the best years of their lives with some undesirable from school. For a precious few, it works out, but for the majority, going to uni with a first love from home is like forever eating salad with no dressing or getting into Hogwarts and opting for your local grammar school instead. We were students once, hence the know-it-all tone. Boyfriends who, with hindsight, had nothing on the corridors of attractive, intelligent, first-time-away-from-home freshers in our halls. Almost invariably, they had split up by Christmas — after the gift exchange. Your first year of university is daunting, and it can feel easier in the moment to hold on to a security blanket beau from your school. Then when I did see him it was awkward because we were living separate lives.

'Should I dump my girlfriend before uni?'
Going to a university is a big change in a person's life. At a university, you have the freedom to go where you please and create your own schedule without anyone telling you what to do. If you have never had a girlfriend, this is a great time to start dating. If you dated throughout high school but moved away to go to college, chances are you will want to find a new girlfriend that goes to your school. Getting a girlfriend takes time and patience, but if you find a good match, the process will be more enjoyable than stressful.

In addition to the many other challenges incoming students face, some must also face a difficult decision — whether or not they will be single during their first year at UCR. Across the board almost everyone who I have asked has admitted that distance is one of the main reasons for breaking off a relationship. However, although it may be a dealbreaker for some, it is possible to remedy such an issue. Admittedly, a six-hour car ride one way was the consensus as to how much distance was too much.
